Academic Policies

  • Students must maintain a cumulative graduate grade point average (GPA) of “B” (3.0). Students whose cumulative graduate GPA fall below 3.0 are placed on academic probation. While on academic probation, failure to bring the cumulative graduate GPA up during the next semester of registration will result in academic dismissal. Students who have been placed on academic probation that raise their overall graduate GPA to 3.0 the following semester will be removed from academic probation. Students on academic probation who do raise their cumulative graduate GPA the following semester but who fail again to achieve a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 are continued on probation until they achieve a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. No more than three (3) hours of “C” (2.0) work may be included as degree credit. A course may only be repeated once. A grade of “D” or “F” will result in academic dismissal.
  • Students may request a one-year leave of absence from the program by submitting a written request to the program director. If a student is absent from the program for more than one year (three semesters), the student must apply for readmission.
  • All credit applied to a degree program must be earned within six (6) years of the first registration.
  • Faculty members approve all academic policies for Graduate Studies programs.
  • Students may request to change from full-time to part-time or from part-time to full-time by submitting a written request to the program director.

Transfer Credits

Degree-seeking students may apply for transfer of up to twelve (12) semester hours of graduate-level coursework by filing out an Application for Transfer Credit form. Transfer credit is approved only when the following conditions are met:

  • Courses submitted for transfer must have been completed within the six years prior to beginning the program.
  • Before taking a course intended for transfer, a student must submit the Application for Transfer Credit form and supply course syllabi and a course description from the course catalog that specifically describes course name, number, course requirements, and content. The student should attach a cover letter stating which course or courses the transferred courses will replace in the student’s program of studies and a rationale for the substitution. This material should be submitted to the Holt Student Services.
  • Upon completion of the substitute course, a student must supply an official transcript that verifies that the course or courses being submitted for transfer were completed with a grade of “B” or better.
  • The program director will determine if the transfer is appropriate. Courses will be approved for transfer only if there is substantial consistency between the proposed transfer course and the required course.

Applied Practice Experience

Participation in an applied practice experience in partnership with a public health or related organization is required.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements include the following:

  • Completion of all course requirements for the degree with a minimum grade point average of “B” (3.0);

Additional Academic Policies

Exams

Cell phones must be silenced and placed face down on the desk in view of the instructor for the entirety of the exam. Once the exam begins, students may not check their phone. Nothing may be on the desk except for a pencil or pen, the exam, a calculator (when permitted), a water bottle, and anything else explicitly permitted by the instructor. Scratch paper will be provided by the instructor when necessary.

Students may not leave the room for any reason once the exam begins. If a student does leave the room after the exam begins, they will not be allowed to return, and the exam must be turned in to the instructor before leaving. The exam will be graded as it was turned in.

Students may leave the room and return once an exam begins only in cases of personal emergency or medical necessity. If the student is unable to return due to a personal emergency of medical necessity, the instructor will determine how the exam will be finished. What constitutes a personal emergency is to the discretion of the instructor and will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

All exam rules apply for exams taken with accommodations.

Make-up opportunities for exams are available only in documented cases of personal emergencies. All such approved make-up work will be administered on a date mutually acceptable to the student and instructor. What constitutes a personal emergency is to the discretion of the instructor and will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

If a student misses an exam due to any reason, they must notify the instructor of this reason before the exam (except for emergency situations for which this is not possible) and make arrangements to take a make-up exam before the exam grades are entered. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that exam.

Academic Integrity

If the instructor suspects any instances of cheating or other lapses of academic integrity such as, but not limited to, the unauthorized sharing of answers, test questions, test content, and prior assignments, or the unauthorized use of AI, the instructor must report it to the MPH Program Director and the Academic Honor Council. This includes suspected cheating on any exam or assignment.

Citation

All citations and references must be in AMA format.

Assignment Submissions

All assignments must be submitted as instructed (i.e. Canvas, in-class, etc.) by the due date and time. Assignments submitted incorrectly will not be accepted (for example an assignment was emailed when it was supposed to have been submitted to Canvas). Incorrectly submitted assignments will be considered late submissions until they are properly submitted as instructed and are subject to the late submission penalty.

All assignments must be submitted in the proper format for that assignment (i.e. Word, PDF, Excel Spreadsheet, SAS Results, etc.). Assignments not submitted in the proper format will be considered late until submitted properly. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure all submitted material opens properly. Corrupted files, files that do not open, or files that are unreadable will be considered late submissions until a readable file in the proper format is submitted and are subject to the late submission penalty.

All late assignments submitted correctly within 24 hours of the due date/time will result in a grade reduction of 25%.  All late assignments submitted after 24 hours of the due date/time but within 48 hours of the due date/time will result in a grade reduction of 50%. All assignments submitted after 48 hours of the due date/time will not be accepted and will result in a grade of zero (0) for that assignment.

Except when justified by extenuating circumstances, it is unfair to other students to ask for grade dispensation, deadline extension, alternative assignments or relaxation of class policy as outlined in the course syllabus. No incomplete grading or extensions will be granted unless documented severe illness or extenuating circumstances justify it as determined by the instructor. Assignments/exams in other classes, job pressures, traffic, or computer hardware/software failures do not qualify as extenuating circumstances.

Grades

Grade inflation, including, but not limited to grading curves, is prohibited in the MPH Program and all grades awarded must reflect the actual grades students earn. Instructors must notify the program director of any student that earned a “C-“, “C”, or “C+” for the course when final grades are due to ensure.

Attendance

Attendance in class is mandatory. Students are expected to arrive and leave class on time, and if for some reason they cannot, the student must let the instructor know prior to class. Repeated tardiness or early dismissal may result in an absence(s). The number of tardy infractions resulting in penalty is to the discretion of the instructor. Two (2) absences will result in an automatic reduction of one full letter grade in your overall course grade. More than two (>2) absences will automatically result in an “F”, “WF”, or “W” for the course.

Class Time

Because the MPH is as a blended program a certain amount of in-person instruction is required. All classes should begin and end as scheduled. In certain instances, a class session may require more in-person instruction than the regularly scheduled time allows. In such cases, the instructor should do their best to inform students ahead-of-time and classes should end no later than 30 minutes after the regularly scheduled time. Instructors should be mindful to end classes as scheduled when possible and ending after such time should be considered the exception.

The Ethical Use of AI

The use of AI on all assignments in the MPH program is strictly prohibited except when otherwise explicitly allowed by the instructor. Unless your instructor has approved the use of these programs for a specific assignment, presenting AI-generated work as your own is considered Unauthorized Collaboration and a violation of the Academic Honor Code.

Assignments Prohibiting the Use of AI

  • The use of AI in any capacity will be considered a violation of the academic honor code and will result in an automatic grade of zero (0) on the assignment.

Assignments Permitting the Use of AI

  • Students may only use the AI software explicitly allowed by the instructor. The use of any other AI software is strictly prohibited will be considered a violation of the academic honor code and may result in an automatic grade of zero (0) on the assignment.
  • AI use must not exceed the specified permitted usage explicitly allowed by the instructor. For example, if AI is permitted by the instructor for editing purposes only, then you may not use it for content generation. Any AI usage other than the stated permitted use for that assignment will be considered a violation of the academic honor code and may result in an automatic grade of zero (0) on the assignment.
  • You must disclose each time AI was used. How each use of AI is disclosed is to the discretion of the instructor. Not disclosing each and every usage of AI in the manner explicitly required by the instructor will be considered a violation of the academic honor code and may result in an automatic grade of zero (0) on the assignment. Instructors may require AI usage documentation.

Accommodation

All accommodations must be approved by the Office of Accessibility Services and the instructor of the course. Instructors will do their best to provide accommodations when possible, however, not all accommodations are available for all assignments due to the nature of certain assignments.

Exams taken outside of the regularly scheduled classroom/time must be taken in-person at a location and time agreed upon by the instructor. Exams may not be taken at the Office of Accessibility Services.

Exams must be taken within 24 hours before the regularly scheduled exam. Exams may not be taken outside of this timeframe. This will likely require the exam to be taken during regular business hours and it is the responsibility of the student receiving the accommodation to make all necessary arrangements to be available to take the exam in-person during this timeframe at the location determined by the instructor. Students that fail to do so must take the exam at the regularly scheduled date, time and location.

Students must make arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the regularly scheduled exam time. Students that fail to do so must take the exam at the regularly scheduled date, time and location.
