Students seeking personal enrichment through writing, as well as those seeking skill and versatility in professional arenas, are well served through the minor in creative writing. In addition to an emphasis on expressive and creative writing, the selection of courses for the minor offers training and practice in writing skills and discourse forms found in public, professional, and academic contexts.

Minor Requirements

Students seeking a creative writing minor take six (6) courses, including a minimum of three (3) courses at the 300-level or above.

Note: Students in both the English Major and the Writing Minor may count up to two courses toward both programs. ENGW 140 and ENGW 225 may not be used as an elective in the creative writing minor. Students are encouraged to design an intentional sequence within the minor: for example, taking both ENGW 261 (Writing Poetry) and ENGW 361 (Poetry Writing Workshop).  Other sequences include 262-362 (Creative Nonfiction) and 263-363 (Fiction).  Students are also encouraged to tak a 400-level course as a capstone to their minor experience.
